Bryant’s defense faces returning Princeton playmakers

Bryant has allowed no touchdowns in two games against FCS opponents, according to Bryant University Athletics, the school’s official athletics outlet. That’s the strongest reason to question laying SPF’s 2.5 points with Princeton in its season opener Saturday at 1 p.m. at Beirne Stadium.

The Bulldogs are 2-1 after a 31-3 win at Hampton. Quarterback Brennan Myer threw for 216 yards and two touchdowns and added a rushing touchdown in that game, giving Bryant a recent example of winning with more than its defense.

Princeton returns running back Ethan Clark, a second-team All-Ivy League selection last season, and receiver Josh Robinson, who recorded 569 receiving yards. Those players give the Tigers options to test a Bryant defense allowing FCS opponents 127 rushing yards and 189 passing yards per game.

Betting decision

SPF lists Princeton at -150 and Bryant at +121. Princeton is the market’s favorite, but the available evidence doesn’t establish a likely winner strongly enough to back either moneyline or the spread. Bryant’s two-game FCS defensive sample also isn’t enough to support a bet under 44.5 without current-season evidence from Princeton’s offense. Pass.
