App State's passing game sets the test

Malachi Singleton has completed 42 of 52 passes for 558 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions through two starts, according to App State Athletics, the school's official athletics website. That accuracy makes App State the pick to win, though SPF's 17.5-point spread requires a victory by at least 18.

Charlotte's finishing was a problem in its 41-9 loss at Ole Miss. App State Athletics reports that all three of the 49ers' second-half scoring drives ended in field goals shorter than 30 yards. Settling for three points on those opportunities would make it harder to keep pace Saturday.

Charlotte has started Cole Gonzales in both games, but former starter Conner Harrell also played against Ole Miss. Those appearances don't confirm how the quarterbacks will share snaps this week.

Betting verdict

App State's results offer two very different margins: a 55-3 win over Maine and a 27-24 win over East Carolina. Two games against different opponents don't establish that an 18-point win is the right expectation here. Pass on the spread.
