Wagner at California prediction: Pass on Cal -58.5
Analysis updated September 19, 2026 at 6:14 AM CDT
Wagner's latest defeat makes a rout plausible. It doesn't settle whether California can cover a 58.5-point spread.
Wagner's last result puts the spread in focus
Wagner lost 87-3 at James Madison last week, according to Yahoo Sports / California Golden Bears On SI, a Cal-focused sports outlet carried by Yahoo Sports. That result shows why taking Wagner solely because SPF offers +58.5 is a weak argument. California must win by at least 59 to cover.
Cal enters 1-1 after beating Syracuse 21-18. Quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele has four touchdown passes and averages 226.5 passing yards through two games. California is the likely winner, but those results don't establish that laying -58.5 is worthwhile. Pass on the spread.
Newman faces an interception threat
The same preview reports that Benjamin Newman is expected to start for Wagner. Jack Stevens hasn't played since suffering a neck injury in the opener. Newman has completed 58.5% of his passes for 380 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in three games. Cal safety Kingston Lopa has four interceptions, including three against Syracuse. Turnovers could help California build the margin required, but Newman's record doesn't justify assuming they'll come.
SPF's total is 65.5, with both sides priced at -110. Wagner running back Matt Morad and Cal running back Carter Vargas are questionable, and California hasn't released an injury report. With those roles unresolved and limited scoring evidence, pass on the total. The moneyline price is unavailable; pass there too.
