New Mexico vs. San José State Prediction: Defensive Questions Point to a Pass

Analysis updated October 30, 2026 at 8:23 AM CDT

The Lobos are the likely winners, but two of their most productive defensive starters remain questionable before Saturday’s game.

New Mexico’s defensive absences matter at this price

New Mexico visits San José State as a 14.5-point favorite, but the status of two every-game defensive starters makes that spread difficult to back. Yahoo Sports / Albuquerque Journal reports that boundary end Darren Agu and boundary safety Tavian Combs are questionable. Agu has a team-high 28 quarterback pressures and four sacks, while Combs has four interceptions and 28 tackles.

The Lobos will already be without linebacker Jaxton Eck and receiver Shawn Miller, while receiver Abraham Williams is questionable. San José State receiver Jase Nix is out, and four Spartans are questionable, including offensive lineman Tyler Chen. A second Mountain West availability report is due before kickoff, so either roster could change after the current price was set.

The market favors New Mexico, but the wager does not

New Mexico is 6-1 and San José State is 4-4, according to iHeart Sports Bay Area. SPF lists the Lobos at -650 on the moneyline and the Spartans at +470. That price makes New Mexico the likely winner, but it offers little return while Agu and Combs remain uncertain.

The ScoresAndOdds consensus page reports that San José State has attracted 61% of spread tickets and 56% of spread money at +14.5. Those figures do not prove the underdog will cover, but they also provide no reason to lay two touchdowns with New Mexico before the final availability report. Pass on both the spread and the expensive Lobos moneyline.
