Arizona State vs. BYU Prediction: Cougars Can Cover 16.5
Analysis updated October 31, 2026 at 8:37 AM CDT
Arizona State’s road losses and expected first-time starting quarterback make BYU the likely winner, but the large spread limits confidence.
Arizona State faces a difficult road test
Arizona State freshman Jake Fette is expected to make his first career start Saturday at LaVell Edwards Stadium. KSL Sports reports that Fette completed 3 of 6 passes for 45 yards over four drives after replacing Cutter Boley against Kansas State. That limited experience favors BYU, which is laying 16.5 points at home.
The Sun Devils have lost their two true road games this season by an average of 28 points. BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier has also played more efficiently in Provo, completing 69% of his passes across four home games compared with 57% on the road. Those results support the Cougars, though a 16.5-point spread leaves little room for a flat performance.
Prediction and betting outlook
Arizona State can reduce Fette’s burden by leaning on Cardae Mack, who ran for 159 yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries against Kansas State. A productive running game could shorten the contest and make a large spread harder for BYU to cover.
BYU safety Evan Johnson is unavailable, while tight end Preston Rex is probable. Running back LJ Martin is nearing a return but may remain out, and Sione Moa had 13 carries last week. Those availability questions keep this from being a high-confidence play, but Arizona State’s road record and uncertainty at quarterback make BYU -16.5 the lean. The Cougars should win, although their -800 moneyline offers too little return to recommend.
