Georgia Tech vs. Virginia Tech Prediction: Injuries Make Hokies -10 a Pass

Analysis updated October 16, 2026 at 8:14 AM CDT

Georgia Tech's depleted defense favors Virginia Tech, but the Hokies' -375 moneyline offers little room for uncertainty.

Georgia Tech's absences favor Virginia Tech

The Tech Lunch Pail, a Virginia Tech sports publication, reports that Georgia Tech will be without defensive ends Jordan Boyd, Jordan Walker and A.J. Hoffler, linebacker Kyle Efford, cornerback Daiquan White, and safeties Fenix Felton and Will Kiker for Saturday's 3:30 p.m. ET game at Lane Stadium. That depleted defense is the clearest reason to favor the Hokies.

Virginia Tech quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer has thrown for 1,734 yards and 12 touchdowns through six games, according to the report. His production gives the Hokies a way to attack Georgia Tech's missing defensive personnel.

Running back uncertainty hurts the underdog

Georgia Tech running back Malachi Hosley is out, while Justice Haynes is doubtful. Haynes has gained 462 yards and scored three touchdowns on 87 carries through five games, so his possible absence makes it harder to support the Yellow Jackets at +10.

Georgia Tech offensive lineman Josh Petty is also questionable. Virginia Tech has defensive losses of its own, with linebacker George Ballance and defensive lineman Emmett Laws ruled out, but Georgia Tech's unsettled backfield limits the case for taking the points.

The price leaves no clear wager

SPF lists Virginia Tech at -375 on the moneyline and -10 on the spread, with Georgia Tech at +295. The Hokies are the more likely winner, but their own availability report includes offensive lineman Justin Terry out and offensive lineman Montavious Cunningham plus receivers Shamarius Peterkin and L.J. Booker questionable. Those absences make both Virginia Tech prices difficult to justify.

The total is 56.5, with the over at -108 and the under at -112. The available evidence doesn't provide enough information about either team's scoring profile to support a total wager. Pass.
