Chattanooga vs. East Tennessee State Prediction: Mocs Defense Makes +3 Appealing
Analysis updated October 3, 2026 at 8:06 AM CDT
East Tennessee State is favored at home, but Chattanooga’s defense gives the Mocs a credible path to stay within three points.
Chattanooga’s defense faces its biggest test
East Tennessee State’s offense enters the Rail Rivalry after a 58-31 win over Western Carolina. East Tennessee State University Athletics reports that quarterback Mason Mims has completed 72.2% of his passes for 1,211 yards, while the Buccaneers’ four primary running backs have combined for 880 yards, 15 touchdowns and 5.7 yards per carry.
Chattanooga has the defense to slow that attack. University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Athletics lists the Mocs fifth in the FCS in passing defense at 136.2 yards allowed per game, seventh in total defense at 266.6 and ninth in scoring defense at 14.2 points per game. Chattanooga has surrendered only 15 points in two Southern Conference wins. Those results make the Mocs +3 more attractive than their +119 moneyline.
The Mocs can control the pace
Chattanooga also averages 201.8 rushing yards per game, which ranks 16th in the FCS. Kevin Lalin contributes 95.8 rushing yards per game and has six touchdowns, while Journey Wyche averages 7.5 yards per carry. A productive ground game would shorten the game and reduce the number of possessions ETSU has to pull away.
ETSU deserves to be favored after rushing for 233 yards and six touchdowns against Western Carolina, and Chattanooga is playing its fourth road game in six contests. The Buccaneers are the more likely winner at home, but Chattanooga’s defense and rushing production support taking the full three points.
