Blackhawks vs. Sabres Prediction: Buffalo Likely Wins, but -230 Is Too Steep
Analysis updated October 3, 2026 at 8:36 AM CDT
Buffalo has the better matchup at home against a winless Chicago team missing Connor Bedard. The Sabres are still too expensive at -230, so the betting lean is Pass.
Chicago’s slow start favors Buffalo
Chicago enters the final stop of its season-opening road trip at 0-2-0 after being outscored 11-2 by Vegas and Utah. Buffalo Sabres / NHL.com reports that Connor Bedard is expected to miss at least the first month with an offseason shoulder injury. Those losses make Buffalo the likelier winner at home, but that advantage is already reflected in the Sabres’ -230 moneyline.
Buffalo also lost its opener 6-3 at Columbus. The Sabres went 0-for-5 on the power play and killed only one of three penalties, according to Buffalo Sabres / NHL.com. That one-game performance doesn’t establish a trend, but it gives bettors little reason to accept such a steep price.
Betting view
Olen Zellweger is expected to make his Buffalo debut after missing the opener with a concussion. His return adds an option to the Sabres’ lineup, though there isn’t enough evidence to assign it a specific betting value.
Buffalo should win, but laying -230 is a tougher sell. The available evidence also doesn’t justify Chicago +1.5, Buffalo -1.5, or either side of the 6.5 total. With no confirmed starters and only three combined games of current-season form, Pass is the best betting decision.
