Iowa vs. Iowa State Prediction: Can the Hawkeyes Cover 14?
Analysis updated September 12, 2026 at 9:21 AM CDT
Iowa allowed 120 yards in its opener. Covering SPF's 14-point spread also requires an offense whose starting quarterback remained unannounced.
Iowa's defense leads the case
Iowa held Northern Illinois to 120 total yards in a 40-0 win, according to Covers / Field Level Media, a sports betting publication and sports news service. That defensive performance makes Iowa my tentative winner, but one opener doesn't establish that the Hawkeyes should cover SPF's -14.
The same report said Iowa hadn't publicly named its starting quarterback as of Sept. 12. Hank Brown started the opener and completed 12 of 20 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown. Jeremy Hecklinski went 7 of 16 for 76 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Neither performance settles how reliably Iowa can build a large lead.
Betting decision: Pass
Iowa State beat Southeast Missouri State 38-10 with six sacks. Jaylen Raynor threw for 184 yards and two touchdowns on 8-of-16 passing. Those results give Iowa's protection and secondary something to answer, but they don't establish an edge for the Cyclones at +14 or +470.
The availability report also lists Iowa State receiver Jordyn Bailey out and running back Aiden Flora questionable. Iowa running back L.J. Phillips Jr. is listed out with an ankle injury. Their production and replacements aren't established here, so assigning a scoring adjustment would be speculative.
At SPF's Iowa moneyline of -650, the break-even win rate is about 86.7%. The available evidence doesn't justify that estimate. I'll pass on the moneyline, spread and 40.5 total.
