The NFL season is upon us, and given that the Patriots are playing in the season opener, you will no doubt see many fans of the Patriots on television. Many of those fans may be holding signs or saying angry things or generally expressing their displeasure toward Roger Goodell. Now, as a baseline, let’s remember that most NFL fans hate Roger Goodell, whose extremely loose application of disciplinary rules and generally bumbling disposition leaves a distinct sort of ennui hanging over the league whenever he gets involved. Rob Ninkovich won’t be playing with the Patriots when they take on the Chiefs on Thursday night because he announced his retirement at the start of training camp. Ninkovich’s retirement was followed by the release of Kony Ealy and the injury that landed Derek Rivers on injured reserve, leaving the team thinner on the edge than it looked like they’d be when camp got underway. The Patriots traded for Cassius Marsh last weekend and his arrival gives them a little more depth up front on defense, so there doesn’t appear to be any immediate reason to expect Ninkovich will walk back through the locker room doors. As NFL Commissioner, the public face of the league, Roger Goodell pretty much has to attend the first game of the 2017 season on Thursday night. USA Today reports that Goodell will be present at Gillette Stadium when the New England Patriots host the Kansas City Chiefs, and his welcome is unlikely to be a warm one. Dave Portnoy, the Massachusetts native and founder of the website Barstool Sports, has ordered a shipment of 70,000 towels depicting Goodell as a clown to be handed out in Foxboro on Thursday. The New England Patriots’ 2017 season — and the NFL season as a whole — begins Thursday night at Gillette Stadium against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Patriots and Chiefs will meet at at 8:30 p.m. ET on NBC (stream it on NBCSports.com). Unlike last year’s season-opener for the Pats, Tom Brady will be back home in the pocket. Everything isn’t back to normal for the reigning Super Bowl champs, though, with the team having to put wideout Julian Edelman on IR for the season.
