Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy was part of South Florida's pitch to the Big 12 and former major league first baseman Tino Martinez also went to bat for the Bulls. The Big 12 on Friday concluded a week of meetings in North Texas with the 11 schools vying to join the conference. USF, Cincinnati and Rice made the final presentations, according to three people with knowledge of the meetings who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. Continue to Article

Quinton Flowers threw for 178 yards and two touchdowns, helping South Florida open the season with a 56-20 rout of overmatched Towson on Saturday night. The dual-threat quarterback also scored on runs of 5 and 7 yards, showing why he's one of the reasons USF enters the year with heightened expectations of contending for its first American Athletic Conference championship after improving from four wins two seasons ago to eight in 2015. Red-shirt sophomore Morgan Mahalak, who spent two years at Oregon before transferring to FCS Towson, threw for 165 yards in his debut for the Tigers. Continue to Article

Now that he's lifted South Florida out of the American Athletic Conference basement, Willie Taggart is aiming to take the Bulls all the way to the top of the league. The coach enters the fourth season of a reclamation project coming off an 8-5 finish that saw the team hit its stride after a disappointing 1-3 start that included losses to Florida State, Maryland and Memphis. ''When you win and see how much fun it is, it's contagious,'' Taggart said, adding he doesn't anticipate his players having much difficulty retaining the hunger that fueled last season's turnaround. The University of South Florida is one of about 20 schools pitching itself to be the next member of the Big 12 Conference and it’s doing so by touting itself a great research university. BREAKING: #USF has prepared promotional material, including case statement (here's 1st page) and video to Big 12. There it is, in the paragraph under the bolded paragraph, “reasearch.” Luckily for the school, this copy of the pitch obtained by the Tampa Bay Times had not officially been submitted. Florida State has state championship rings. No, this is not a joke. It really does. #StateChamps pic.twitter.com/1084utCJZr — FSU Football (@FSU_Football) June 23, 2016 The Seminoles beat Florida and Miami in 2015. According to the Tallahasse Democrat, the players received the rings on Thursday and they are "personalized with last names, and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on the left side, and scores for both games on the right side." The Seminoles also beat South Florida, but the poor Bulls don't get to have the score of their loss to the Seminoles on the rings. Sorry USF. And, as you likely know, Florida State lost to Houston in the Peach Bowl, so part of the ring is commemorating a loss. [ Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for entertaining things you won’t see on the blog ] We're wondering just how many players will be wearing their state championship rings on a regular basis. Or how many players would have preferred the cash value of the ring instead of the ring itself. If only FSU could have given them the option within NCAA rules. FSU plays all three Florida teams again in 2016. If the Seminoles don't win the ACC or their bowl game, a second-straight state title ring from a team a few years removed from a national championship would be, uh, fun. Especially if South Florida merits inclusion. Can't keep ignoring Willie Taggart's team.
