ETSU vs. North Carolina prediction: Mims' passing tests a 34.5-point spread
Analysis updated September 12, 2026 at 5:16 AM CDT
ETSU's early passing production gives North Carolina something to address, though it doesn't establish that the Buccaneers can cover SPF's +34.5.
What the passing numbers tell us
ETSU quarterback Mason Mims has thrown for 615 yards, five touchdowns and one interception through two games, according to sports betting publication Covers. That production matters against SPF's North Carolina -34.5 spread: sustained scoring from the Buccaneers would make a 35-point winning margin harder to reach.
Mims threw three of those touchdowns against Tusculum on September 5. That performance alone doesn't establish how he'll fare against UNC. Covers reports that North Carolina quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. completed 16 of 28 passes for 232 yards against TCU on August 29, without a touchdown or interception.
Covers also lists UNC tight end J. Warren as out, with tight end J. Washington and running back Benjamin Hall questionable. Those absences could limit the Tar Heels' options, but their effect on scoring isn't clear.
Pick and betting decision
North Carolina is the outright pick, consistent with its status as SPF's heavy favorite. At -100000, however, a $1,000 moneyline wager would yield just $1 in profit. There's no demonstrated edge at that price.
Pass on the spread and the 54.5 total. The quarterback results come against different opponents, and they don't establish either a likely winning margin or a combined scoring range.
