Utah Mammoth vs. Buffalo Sabres prediction: Utah’s power play offers a slight edge
Analysis updated October 10, 2026 at 9:11 AM CDT
Utah’s special teams can punish a Buffalo team that has started slowly, though the Mammoth’s latest loss shows the risk at -108.
Utah’s power play is the clearest edge
Utah Mammoth / NHL.com reports that Utah enters Saturday’s game averaging 3.60 goals with an NHL-best 40.0% power play. Nick Schmaltz and Clayton Keller have seven points apiece, giving the Mammoth enough scoring threats to justify a slight lean at the SPF price of -108.
That advantage isn’t reliable yet. Utah went 0-for-7 on the power play and allowed three goals on four Boston opportunities in a 6-1 loss Thursday. One poor game doesn’t erase Utah’s strong start, but it makes the Mammoth difficult to back with much confidence.
Buffalo’s slow starts create an opening
Buffalo Sabres / NHL.com reports that the Sabres have trailed after the first period in each of their four games. Utah scored at least four goals in each of its first three wins, so another early Buffalo deficit could force the Sabres to chase a team that has already shown it can finish chances.
Buffalo also ranks fifth in 5-on-5 scoring chances per 60 minutes, which helps explain why the Sabres are slight -112 favorites. The concern is that Buffalo hadn’t confirmed its lineup or starting goalie when its game-day preview was published. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen has a 4.02 goals-against average and .782 save percentage through three appearances, while Colten Ellis recorded a 1.86 GAA and .900 save percentage in one game.
Betting pick
Utah’s stronger early scoring and power play make the Mammoth moneyline at -108 the lean. The unconfirmed goalie assignments and Utah’s special-teams collapse in Boston keep it a low-confidence play.
