Tulane vs. Army Prediction: Black Knights’ Ground Game Targets a Weak Run Defense
Analysis updated October 10, 2026 at 7:27 AM CDT
Army’s nation-leading rushing attack creates the clearest mismatch, but the Black Knights’ defense makes covering more difficult than winning.
Army’s rushing attack sets the matchup
Army is a 3.5-point home favorite because its strength meets Tulane’s most vulnerable area. Underdog Dynasty / SB Nation reported that the Black Knights entered averaging an FBS-best 334 rushing yards per game and 6.4 yards per carry. Tulane allowed 191 rushing yards per game, ranking 125th nationally. That matchup favors Army’s ability to control possession and wear down the Green Wave.
Quarterback Cale Hellums led Army with 301 rushing yards entering Saturday. Running back Godspower Nwawuihe’s status remained unknown after he missed the Louisiana Tech game, but Army’s overall production on the ground still supports the Black Knights at -3.5.
Tulane’s offense brings uncertainty
Tulane hadn’t announced a starting quarterback after Kadin Semonza started Weeks 2 through 4 and true freshman Trace Johnson replaced him in the fourth quarter against Southern Miss. The Green Wave entered with a 54.2% completion rate and had allowed 3.3 sacks per game. That uncertainty makes it harder to trust Tulane to answer if Army builds a lead.
Army’s defense gives Tulane a path to stay within the number. The Black Knights allowed more than 500 yards to Louisiana Tech in their previous game and entered with only three sacks and no forced turnovers. Tulane running back Jamauri McClure was expected to make his season debut, though his likely workload was not reported.
Betting verdict
Army is the more likely winner, but laying 3.5 points carries more risk than the rushing matchup alone suggests. The Black Knights’ weak defensive production could keep Tulane close, while the Green Wave’s unsettled quarterback situation favors Army. The lean is Army -3.5 at low confidence; the -166 moneyline asks bettors to pay a higher price without resolving those defensive concerns.
