A likely winner at an unappealing price

The price is the problem with Southern Miss on September 5. SPF has the Golden Eagles at -2800 to beat Alcorn State, meaning a $2,800 risk earns $100 in profit. That requires a win rate of approximately 96.6% to break even, more certainty than the limited evidence on Southern Miss supports.

That passing efficiency offers Alcorn State a way to stay competitive, though the Miles game tells us little about how well the Braves will throw against Southern Miss. It does not confirm their starters for this game, either.

The running game produced just 94 yards and one touchdown on 37 attempts, approximately 2.5 yards per carry. More production on the ground would take pressure off the passing game. Without it, the Braves could again need Tolbert to keep possessions moving.

Three unsettled spots on the Southern Miss line

Southern Miss' September 1 depth-chart report left three offensive-line spots shared: Braden Cain and Larry Edwards at left tackle, Zerian Hudson and Greg Nunnery Jr. at left guard, and Dante Devine and Christian Young at right tackle. Joe Rounds was listed as the starting center and Aloali'i Maui as the starting right guard.

A shared designation is no proof of poor blocking. But the report offers little basis for judging whether this line can help Southern Miss sustain the scoring needed to cover 21 points.

Robert Briggs and Steven Robinson also shared an OR designation at running back. Jaylen Himes and Mario Sanders were listed as starting receivers, and Jahmir Davis was reported out for the season with an ACL injury. These were September 1 designations, not a confirmed game-day lineup.

For Alcorn State to keep the score close, it needs its passing efficiency to carry over and its running game to improve. That gives bettors reason to hesitate before laying 21, without making the Braves the pick to win.
