The Citadel’s ground game sets the test

The Citadel rushed for 227 yards in its opening loss at Wofford, giving Charlotte’s defense a concrete challenge in its season debut. SPF lists the 49ers as 15.5-point favorites, but that rushing total alone offers little basis for projecting Saturday’s margin.

According to The Citadel Athletics’ game preview, the Bulldogs enter 0-1 and Charlotte opens at 0-0. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET on Sept. 5 at Jerry Richardson Stadium.

The Bulldogs’ production against Wofford is a useful starting point, not proof they can sustain drives against Charlotte. It also came in a loss. Backing The Citadel at +15.5 requires more than evidence that it can gain yards on the ground against a different opponent.

Prediction and SPF betting outlook

Charlotte is the tentative straight-up pick, consistent with its status as SPF’s -800 moneyline favorite against The Citadel at +550. That price requires a win probability above 88.9% to break even.
