Nicholls vs. Kansas State Prediction: Wildcats Likely to Win, but -40.5 Is Too Much

Analysis updated September 5, 2026 at 12:51 AM CDT

Kansas State should handle Nicholls at home. Winning by more than 40 points is another matter for a team debuting a new coach and 58 new players.

Matchup outlook

Kansas State is the likely winner in Collin Klein's first game as head coach, but the Wildcats must win by at least 41 points to cover. They enter the opener with 58 new players, including 26 Division I or II transfers. That turnover makes such a large margin difficult to trust.

Nicholls already has a game behind it. The Colonels beat Mississippi Valley State 44-10 while gaining 516 yards. Ean Rodrigue passed for 264 yards and three touchdowns, giving the offense some production to build on in its first road test.

What could decide the spread

Home field and the expected roster advantage make Kansas State the outright pick. Neither makes -40.5 appealing. Klein is making his coaching debut, and a heavily rebuilt roster may need time to find its footing.

Nicholls has at least shown a path to staying within the number. Its passing game produced in the opener, while the defense held Mississippi Valley State to 79 passing yards and made three interceptions. One game against that opponent, however, does not establish how the Colonels will fare against Kansas State.

Kansas State also enters with offensive-line questions. John Pastore, Tanner Morley and Oliver Miller were injured during training camp. A September 1 projection listed Ryan Howard, Charlie Adams, Dylan Villarouel and Gus Hawkins on the line, but confirmed game-day availability was unavailable. The impact of those injuries cannot be measured confidently.

An upset remains unlikely. Nicholls has lost 13 consecutive games against FBS opponents and 10 straight on the road. Those streaks support Kansas State as the most likely winner, but they do not make the Wildcats worth backing at -40.5.

Prediction and betting assessment

Kansas State is projected to win 42-10. That would be comfortable, but the 32-point margin would not cover -40.5. Asking the Wildcats to dominate for four quarters is a steep price with a new head coach, 58 new players and unresolved lineup questions.

The betting lean is Nicholls +40.5, with low confidence. The Colonels showed enough offense in their opener to make the points worth considering. Still, Kansas State has not played, and the available research provides no confirmed starters, final injury designations or meaningful line movement.
