Georgia Tech enters with the stronger foundation

Georgia Tech went 9-4 and finished No. 24 nationally in 2025. Colorado finished 3-9 overall and 1-8 in Big 12 play. The Yellow Jackets also beat the Buffaloes 27-20 in last season's opener, and they should win the rematch at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Five of Georgia Tech's 2025 all-ACC performers return, including Kyle Efford, Malachi Hosley and Ethan Mackenny. Colorado, meanwhile, must replace every full-time starter from a defense that allowed 425.7 yards per game last season. That gives the Yellow Jackets a clear Week 1 advantage, although their rebuilt offense introduces some risk.

Georgia Tech breaks in a new backfield

Alberto Mendoza is listed as Georgia Tech's starting quarterback and is expected to make his first collegiate start. Transfer Justice Haynes is the RB1, leaving the Yellow Jackets to open the season with a new quarterback-running back combination.

Colorado counters with second-year quarterback Julian Lewis, who threw for 589 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions after replacing Kaidon Salter late in 2025. Receivers Danny Scudero and Kam Perry made the 2026 Biletnikoff Award watch list, giving Lewis two potential playmakers against a Georgia Tech defense with several returning all-conference honorees.

Colorado has a path to stay close

Colorado added 43 transfers after 64 players departed. Its rebuilt defense must communicate and tackle well enough to keep Mendoza and Haynes from settling in early. There is no current performance sample to show whether that group can do it.

Lewis gives the Buffaloes a credible chance to remain within one possession. He did not throw an interception during his late-season work, while Mendoza has never started a college game. Forcing Mendoza into clear passing situations could keep Georgia Tech from pulling away.

The Yellow Jackets still have the steadier base: a 9-4 season, returning all-conference contributors and home field. Conditions should not be a factor. The evening forecast calls for mostly clear skies, a low near 75 degrees, southeast wind around 5 mph and no listed precipitation.

The favorite and the bet are different questions

SPF lists Georgia Tech at -270 on the moneyline and -7 against the spread. Colorado is +220 outright and +7, while the total is 50.5. At DraftKings, 83% of moneyline bets were on Georgia Tech, but that split represents one sportsbook, not the entire market.

Georgia Tech is the most likely winner. That does not make the Yellow Jackets worth betting at -270. Mendoza's first collegiate start adds too much uncertainty for that price, and laying seven presents the same concern. Colorado's passing game, or a slow opening from Georgia Tech's new backfield, could keep the Buffaloes inside the number even if the favorite wins.
