Nebraska-Kearney Lopers vs Chadron State Eagles Predictions

Nebraska-Kearney enters Thursday night with the edge, though not enough of one to justify a wager at an unknown price. The Lopers lost their opener 21-20 to Wayne State. Chadron State fell 42-17 at Northern State after trailing 42-3 through three quarters.

The series history points the same way. Nebraska-Kearney has won six straight meetings and leads the series 52-21-1. The Lopers won 41-21 last season, but both teams gained 306 yards. That result supports Nebraska-Kearney as the likelier winner without establishing value at a number that has not been posted.

Deciding factors

Nebraska-Kearney's defense made an immediate impact against Wayne State with seven tackles for loss, three sacks and an interception. If the Lopers generate similar pressure against returning quarterback Aidan Thompson, Chadron State could struggle to recover from its poor opener.

Chadron State's clearest path is to contain the run and put the game on Devin Tate. The Eagles allowed 3.7 yards per carry in 2025. Quincey Ryker had 63 yards on 15 carries and added 13 receiving yards in Nebraska-Kearney's opener, while Tate completed 10 of 17 passes for 99 yards.

The Eagles have experience in the backfield. Thompson averaged 158 passing yards per game and produced 19 total touchdowns in 2025. Backup Wyatt Sprague went 5 of 7 for 53 yards and rushed for 50 yards in the opener, and Daytuawn Pearson returns after running for 651 yards and five touchdowns last season. That gives Chadron State options, but its 25-point loss remains the more troubling opening result.

Finishing drives could favor Nebraska-Kearney. Chadron State allowed touchdowns on 53% of its opponents' red-zone possessions in 2025. Linebacker Aiden Kuester had eight tackles, one tackle for loss and one pass breakup against Northern State, but the Eagles need a stronger defensive effort across the board to end their six-game skid in the series.

Availability and conditions

Nebraska-Kearney running back Isaiah Harris missed the August 27 opener, and his status remained unresolved as of September 2. That uncertainty lowers confidence in the Lopers and strengthens the case for passing without a posted line.

The weather is unlikely to decide the game. Chadron's daytime forecast called for sunshine, a high near 94 degrees, west-southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph and gusts up to 25 mph. Thursday night was expected to be mostly clear, with temperatures falling toward 62 degrees and winds of 5 to 10 mph shifting from west-southwest to south-southeast.

Nebraska-Kearney is the more likely winner. Its defense produced against Wayne State, its opening loss came by one point, and it has controlled this series.
