Southern Illinois Salukis vs Samford Bulldogs Predictions

Matchup outlook

Southern Illinois is the likely winner, but its 34-31 loss at West Florida did little to inspire confidence in a heavy favorite. The Salukis committed four turnovers, while Samford opened with a 22-10 loss to North Alabama after managing minus-8 rushing yards and allowing six sacks.

Samford's trouble running the ball and protecting Gabarri Johnson gives Southern Illinois the matchup edge. Whether that edge is worth betting depends on the price, and the reported numbers leave almost no room for another sloppy performance by the Salukis.

Southern Illinois may need Jake Curry again

DJ Williams left the West Florida game with a knee injury early in the second quarter. Southern Illinois coach Nick Hill later described his starting quarterback as week-to-week. Jake Curry took over and threw two touchdown passes, but his three interceptions accounted for most of the Salukis' four turnovers.

Curry could generate enough offense to beat Samford if Williams cannot play, but his interceptions make an expensive Southern Illinois ticket difficult to justify. Samford has continuity at quarterback after Johnson completed 19 of 33 passes for 245 yards and one touchdown against North Alabama.

Three factors that can decide the game

Ball security comes first for Southern Illinois. Four turnovers spoiled a productive offensive day at West Florida. Samford's clearest route to an upset is forcing more mistakes and turning them into short fields.

Samford must also protect Johnson and find some production on the ground. Six sacks and minus-8 rushing yards left the Bulldogs in difficult passing situations throughout their opener. Southern Illinois can control the game by pressuring Johnson without compromising its coverage.

Marquise Henderson gives Samford a big-play threat. He caught an 86-yard touchdown pass and added another reception of more than 40 yards against North Alabama. Southern Illinois can answer on the ground after Chandler Chapman rushed for 75 yards on 10 carries, but neither team's explosive gains will mean much if turnovers wipe them out.

Heat and an expensive market

A Heat Advisory is in effect in Birmingham. Thursday's forecast calls for a high near 96 degrees and a heat index as high as 107, conditions that could test both teams' depth and execution later in the game.

FOX Sports displayed Southern Illinois as a 24.5-point favorite and -4000 on the moneyline, with Samford at +24.5 and +1270. The total was 49.5, with Over -117 and Under -106. SportsLine showed a different current market, listing Southern Illinois -20.5 and -1429 after opening at -28.5 and -7143. Its total moved from 51.5 to 53.5.

The authoritative SPF packet contains no moneyline, spread, total or confirmed movement, so the outside prices are not the official betting number for this analysis. They do illustrate the cost of backing Southern Illinois. Even the less expensive -1429 moneyline requires a level of certainty that the Salukis' quarterback situation and four-turnover opener do not support.

FOX Sports reported that Southern Illinois attracted 88% of moneyline bets but only 36% of the money. Samford received 74% of spread bets and 85% of spread money.
