Two women who reported being gang-raped by Baylor University football players have reached a settlement with the school, which has been hammered by months of criticism that it ignored or mishandled assault claims for years. The settlement was announced Tuesday night in a joint statement by Baylor interim President David Garland and the lawyers representing the women. A Baylor athletics official has been charged with misdemeanor assault after allegedly grabbing a reporter by the throat after a football game. Associate Athletic Director Heath Nielsen, 47, was charged with grabbing James McBride, a reporter for the Keller-based Texas Blaze newspaper, as McBride tried to take a picture with a Baylor player on Nov. 5. Baylor’s associate athletic director was arrested earlier this month for assaulting a sportswriter. Baylor Associate Athletic Director Heath Nielsen was arrested earlier this month on a misdemeanor assault warrant after he allegedly grabbed a sportswriter by the throat, according to a report by KWTX. According to the report, James McBride, a writer for The Blaze News, a community newspaper in Keller, which is in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, was taking a picture with a Baylor player following the Bears’ 62-22 loss to TCU on Nov. 5 when Nielsen grabbed him by the “throat with his right hand, squeezed and pushed him away from the football player,” the report said.
