Panthers vs. Falcons Prediction: Robinson Tests Carolina's Run Defense
Analysis updated September 20, 2026 at 5:03 AM CDT
Cooper Rush will start for Atlanta, while Carolina's run defense makes the Panthers difficult to back on the road.
Matchup and betting outlook
Bijan Robinson gets a chance to attack a Carolina defense that allowed 291 rushing yards to Chicago in Week 1. The Carolina Panthers' official team website reports that Robinson opened with 83 rushing yards against Pittsburgh. That matchup gives Atlanta a way to ease the burden on its passing game and makes Carolina's 2.5-point favoritism at SPF harder to back.
NFL.com confirms Cooper Rush will start for Atlanta, with Michael Penix Jr. out because of a knee injury and Tua Tagovailoa doubtful with an oblique injury. Carolina is a tentative winner pick given Atlanta's quarterback absences, but that alone doesn't justify its -155 moneyline.
The running matchup also has injury concerns. NFL.com lists Carolina defensive tackle Bobby Brown III as out with a back injury and Atlanta guard Chris Lindstrom as questionable with a concussion. Brown's absence leaves Carolina short a defensive tackle; Lindstrom's status matters to the offensive line tasked with creating room for Robinson.
Pass on the side: Atlanta's rushing opportunity doesn't establish an edge at +2.5 or +130. The total is 43.5, with either side priced at -110 at SPF. One game's rushing numbers and Atlanta's quarterback change aren't enough to support an over or under wager.
