Cowboys vs. Commanders: Defensive Changes Test Dallas at -3.5
Analysis updated September 19, 2026 at 1:06 AM CDT
Rookie Jaishawn Barham will start and relay Dallas's defensive calls with DeMarvion Overshown out. Washington also has key absences.
Dallas changes its defensive caller
Dallas is laying 3.5 points at SPF while handing rookie Jaishawn Barham the starting MIKE linebacker role and responsibility for relaying defensive calls. DallasCowboys.com, the team's official website, reports that DeMarvion Overshown is out with a hamstring injury and safety Malik Hooker will miss Sunday's game with a forearm injury. Those changes put added responsibility on Barham as Dallas tries to win by at least four points.
Washington has losses of its own. The same report lists linebacker Frankie Luvu out with a groin injury and tight end Chig Okonkwo out with a hamstring injury. Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw is questionable with a back injury. Those absences weaken the case for backing Washington solely because Dallas is shorthanded.
Betting decision: Pass
DallasCowboys.com reports that both teams enter 0-1: Dallas lost 28-20 to the Giants, and Washington fell 24-22 to Philadelphia. Those results alone don't establish how these teams compare or support a projected margin.
SPF prices Dallas at -218 and Washington at +180, with a total of 50.5. Dallas is the market's likelier winner, but there's no clear case that its win probability justifies that price. The defensive absences don't establish a spread or total edge either. Pass.
