Saint Joseph's has the stronger case to win
Saint Joseph's opens its season Wednesday at Hagan Arena against a Longwood team playing its first road game. Saint Joseph's University Athletics reports that the Hawks went 24-12 and reached the NIT quarterfinals last season. They also ranked 24th nationally in defensive efficiency from January 4 through the end of that season, when they went 16-5.
That record makes Saint Joseph's the more likely winner, but the Hawks haven't confirmed their starting lineup. Five players return, including Khaafiq Myers and Mekai Johnson, so last season's defensive results don't establish how this group will perform in its opener.
Longwood's opener offers a limited test
Longwood University Athletics reports that the Lancers beat Pfeiffer 123-67 on November 2. They scored 82 points in the paint, made 11 three-pointers and recorded 23 assists. Jaylen Benard added 14 points and 10 rebounds, while MJ Williams, Will Dopfer and Elijah Thomas scored 12 each.
