Boston’s five-game scoring slump favors Chicago, but strong recent starts from David Peterson and Brayan Bello make the Cubs’ -117 price difficult to justify.
Boston’s scoring slump gives Chicago the edge
CBS Sports / Field Level Media reported that Boston entered the second game of Friday’s Fenway Park doubleheader having lost four of five while scoring no more than two runs in any of those games. Chicago entered at 88-71, three games better than Boston, and is the likelier winner at the SPF moneyline of -117.
MLB / Baseball Savant lists Chicago left-hander David Peterson against Boston right-hander Brayan Bello for the 6:05 p.m. ET game. Peterson had allowed one run over six innings with seven strikeouts in each of his previous two starts, giving the Cubs a starter in good form against Boston’s struggling offense.
Bello makes the price a pass
Bello also enters after a strong outing. He held Tampa Bay to one run over eight innings and struck out 11 on September 19. His 4.49 season ERA was lower than Peterson’s 4.96 mark, so Chicago’s small advantage does not warrant laying -117 without confirmed lineups or evidence on bullpen availability.
Boston is -102, but its recent scoring problems make the home side difficult to back. The 6.5 total also offers too little room for error without lineup, bullpen, injury, or weather information. The best betting decision is to pass.
