Cowboys vs. Commanders: Dallas Faces Defensive Changes as 3.5-Point Favorite
Analysis updated September 20, 2026 at 6:18 AM CDT
Dallas is expected to put a rookie in charge of defensive calls while missing DeMarvion Overshown and Malik Hooker. Washington has defensive absences of its own.
Injuries reshape both defenses
Dallas is laying 3.5 points at SPF with rookie Jaishawn Barham expected to start at middle linebacker and handle defensive calls. The Dallas Cowboys' official team report lists linebacker DeMarvion Overshown out with a hamstring injury and safety Malik Hooker out with a forearm injury. That leaves Dallas changing its defensive communication role while needing a win by at least four points to cover.
The same report rules out Washington linebacker Frankie Luvu with a groin injury and tight end Chig Okonkwo with a hamstring injury. Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw remains questionable after limited practice Friday because of his back. His availability matters to a Washington front already missing Luvu, but those absences alone don't establish a Dallas covering edge.
Betting decision
Sports publication AS USA reports that Washington lost 24-22 to Philadelphia in Week 1, while Dallas lost 28-20 to the New York Giants. Those results against different opponents offer little basis for judging this matchup's winning margin.
SPF makes Dallas the expected winner at -218, with Washington +180. Neither side has a demonstrated matchup advantage strong enough to justify a moneyline bet, and Dallas' defensive changes don't automatically make Washington +3.5 valuable. Pass on the side.
The total is 50.5, with over -120 and under +100 at SPF. Defensive absences could help scoring, but without a clearer read on either offense, they aren't enough to support a totals wager. Pass.
