Yuli Gurriel had a two-run double as part of a four-run first inning and the Houston Astros then used some gritty bullpen work to fend off the visiting Detroit Tigers 5-4 on Monday in the opener of a four-game series. Robinson Chirinos' sacrifice fly in the fifth inning was the difference for the Astros. Gurriel drove home Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez with his double to straightaway center field and later scored on a fielding error by Tigers left fielder Brandon Dixon to cap the Astros' early four-run outburst. Right-hander Zack Greinke earned his 200th career victory, and the visiting Houston Astros avoided a series sweep with a 4-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics. Alex Bregman went 4-for-4 and belted his 30th home run of the season, a three-run shot in the fifth inning that erased a 1-0 deficit and allowed the Astros, who had lost the first three games of the series, to snap a five-game losing streak. Greinke (13-4) held the A's to one run and four hits in seven innings en route to his third consecutive win since joining the Astros in a trade last month. Continue to Article

Willy Adames walked and, one out later, Michael Brosseau reached on an infield hit to load the bases. Continue to Article

The Houston Astros placed infielder Aledmys Diaz on the 10-day injured list Sunday after he suffered dizziness on Saturday that led to an overnight stay in the hospital. The 29-year-old Diaz was dizzy and light-headed on the team bus prior to Saturday's game against the Oakland Athletics, leading to the hospitalization. "We're going to take every precaution imaginable to make sure he's OK," Astros manager A.J. Hinch told reporters before Sunday's series finale in Oakland. Continue to Article

Mike Brosseau came through in the 13th inning to finish a long night and end an extended scoring drought by the Tampa Bay Rays. Brosseau's pinch-hit RBI single in the 13th drove in Eric Sogard to give the Rays a 1-0 win over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night in a game in which the Rays struck out 24 batters without walking any. Sogard doubled off Matt Hall (0-1) with two outs and Tommy Pham was intentionally walked. Continue to Article
