PHOENIX — For months now, the 2017 Giants season has been about finding out what some players can do in 2018. In that respect, this was a big night for a young right-hander.  The Giants lost 4-3 to Zack Greinke and the Diamondbacks, but in the seventh inning of the defeat, Kyle Crick opened some eyes by getting Josh Osich. Crick entered with runners on the corners and got a strikeout and pop-up to end the inning and strand both runners.  “It was a good spot for him with his stuff,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “He hasn’t really been in a situation like that, and I loved the way he handled himself.” Crick came on after Osich did something he has done so often in a disappointing season. First base umpire Mike Estabrook made one of the worst calls of the season on a play in the top of the fifth inning of Thursday afternoon’s game between the Mets and Diamondbacks. Ray was a couple of steps past the first base bag when the ball hit Dominic Smith’s glove, but Estabrook ruled Ray out. Continue to Article

Heyman quotes an unnamed rival executive, who said, “If [Collins] had all those pitchers, it’d be a different story.” And it’s true. Continue to Article

New York Mets outfielder Michael Conforto dislocated his left shoulder Thursday, collapsing and writhing in pain after swinging at a pitch. The All-Star slugger was hurt in the fifth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks, yet another blow to a team beset by injuries all season and now out of contention. With two out and runners on first and second, Conforto swung through a 95 mph fastball by Robbie Ray. Conforto instantly collapsed and grabbed his shoulder. He stayed down for about 40 seconds before being helped to his feet by manager Terry Collins, trainer Ray Ramirez and a member of the coaching staff. Brandon Nimmo replaced Conforto and was called out on strikes. Arizona was ahead 2-1 at Continue to Article
