Toronto
With Justin Smoak a free agent and Rowdy Tellez is coming off a rookie season that isn't particularly encouraging, it's clear that first base is a major hole for the Toronto Blue Jays. Free agency is a valid route, but so too is the trade market where there are some interesting bats floating around who could be a major upgrade for the Blue Jays' lineup. At 29 he's young enough that it seems unlikely that he's completely lost that power stroke — a quality made all the more enticing by his top-notch plate discipline. Continue to Article

The Houston Astros appear to be descending further into a lengthy PR nightmare, and it looks like they're nowhere close to getting out of it. The San Francisco Giants appointed Gabe Kapler as their manager on a three-year contract on Tuesday. Kapler, 44, was fired by the Philadelphia Phillies last month after two disappointing seasons during which they went 161-163. The Giants announced the appointment of Kapler, who replaces Bruce Bochy after the 64-year-old retired at the end of the 2019 MLB season. Continue to Article

Philadelphia
The San Francisco Giants have selected former Philadelphia Phillies manager Gabe Kapler as Bruce Bochy's successor, the team announced Tuesday night. Kapler was fired after two seasons in charge of the Philadelphia Phillies, in which the team hovered around .500 despite an effort to break through in the NL East. The 44-year-old likely had a significant ally in the decision process in Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi, who worked with Kapler when the pair were with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
