Catcher Francisco Mejia homered to lead off the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie and had a key bunt single as the San Diego Padres added three runs in the ninth for a 5-1 victory over the host Chicago Cubs. Cal Quantrill (3-2) threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings in relief for the Padres, giving up two hits without issuing a walk. The San Francisco Giants designated struggling left-handed pitcher Derek Holland for assignment on Sunday along with infielder Ryder Jones. Holland, who signed a one-year, $7 million deal with the Giants in the offseason, started the season in the starting rotation, then was demoted to the bullpen. Just as he was heating up, San Francisco Giants third baseman Evan Longoria wound up on the 10-day injured list Monday due to plantar fasciitis in his left foot. In nine games in July, Longoria hit safely in eight of them, batting .400 with six homers and 12 RBIs.
