Fireworks cap off nearly every Fourth of July celebration across the country each year. The St. Lucie Mets' fireworks display, however, didn't go as planned. The Mets — the New York Mets' Class A affiliate based out of Port St. Lucie, Florida, — attempted to put on a fireworks show after their 4-1 win against Daytona on Thursday night, a nice gesture for fans who chose to spend their Independence Day at First Data Field. A day after teammate Tyler Skaggs was found dead in his team hotel room from undetermined causes, the Los Angeles Angels returned to the field Tuesday and earned a 9-4 win over the Texas Rangers in Arlington, Texas. Los Angeles pitchers Andrew Heaney and Cam Bedrosian carried Skaggs' jersey out before the game and hung it in the dugout. The Angels then sent rookie Jose Suarez to the mound against All-Star Mike Minor of the Rangers, and Texas built a 3-1 lead through four innings. Continue to Article

Michael Conforto snapped out of a slump at an opportune moment Tuesday night when he laced a tiebreaking two-run double in the eighth inning of the New York Mets' 4-2 win over the visiting New York Yankees. The Mets won their second straight following a seven-game losing streak and can win the season series from the Yankees with a win Wednesday night. New York Yankees broadcaster John Sterling, who will turn 81 years old on Thursday, has taken his first days off due to illness in 30 years. Sterling handles play-by-play for the team's radio broadcasts, currently on WFAN, and will call Tuesday and Wednesday games featuring “Subway Series” matchups against the New York Mets. Starting on Thursday's broadcast of the Yankees-Tampa Bay Devil Rays game, he will replaced by by Ryan Ruocco of YES and ESPN. Continue to Article
