As the St. Louis Cardinals took stock of their situation a day after the firing of manager Mike Matheny, some players said they bear some responsibility for Matheny's sudden dismissal. Matheny was fired Saturday night after an 8-2 loss to the last-place Cincinnati Reds. July 15 (UPI) -- The St. Louis Cardinals have fired manager Mike Matheny. St. Louis announced the decision on Saturday night. Matheny, 47, took over as the Cardinals' skipper in 2012. He helped the Cardinals win the National League in 2013. Matheny posted a 591-474 record in more than six seasons as the Cardinals' manager. "Mike Matheny has served the St. Louis Cardinals organization with tremendous dedication and pride, and I am thankful for his service to the Cardinals over the past six and a half seasons," Cardinals principal owner Bill DeWitt Jr. said in a statement. The St. Louis Cardinals officially introduced interim manager Mike Shildt and further explained the dismissal of Mike Matheny on Sunday before their series finale against the Cincinnati Reds. Matheny was fired on Saturday on the heels of a rain-soaked 8-2 loss to the Reds that dropped the Cardinals to 47-46 on the season. The Milwaukee Brewers placed second baseman Jonathan Villar (right thumb) on the 10-day disabled list on Sunday and called up outfielder Brett Phillips from Triple-A Colorado Springs ahead of their series finale against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the team announced. The Brewers also sent right-hander Aaron Wilkerson back to Colorado Springs after he was called up to be the 26th man for Saturday's doubleheader.
