The Orioles starting rotation has been a complete disaster for nearly the entirety of the 2017 season. In the month of September, the offense has joined this stump dump fire. It’s a good recipe for losing a lot of baseball games, and so the O’s have done this month. The awful baseball continued on Friday night against the Rays, with the O’s losing, 7-0. O’s fans can rejoice in one thing about Friday night’s loss, however. It will, barring some poor future decision by Dan Duquette that I don’t want to contemplate, mark the final occasion of having to watch Wade Miley pitch for the O’s. In the immortal words of Gary Thorne, “MERCY!” That’s all we’re asking for as the knife of the 2017 season slowly releases from out of our backs. Just end it. Take us to October. The Orioles are 7-18 this month, with a run differential of -64. September marks the fourth losing month of the six available months, and just over the last seven games, the O’s have been outscored 24-46. There hasn’t been a lot of good to indulge in since September presented itself, but watching the young guys get regular reps has made meaningless Orioles baseball a bit more significant. Hello, friends. Another day finds the Orioles tied for last place in the American League East. They remain locked in last with the Blue Jays, who also lost on Wednesday night. The Jays are idle today, as are the O's, and will finish their season this weekend on the road against the Yankees. The O's latest loss on Wednesday, sealing their sweep at the hands of the Pirates, drops them to 7-18 for the month of September. It is really a challenge to figure out how they have been so bad this month. Of course the pitching has been bad, as it has been bad all year, but the offense has just completely cratered, still. With four games remaining in their season, the Pittsburgh Pirates will likely finish next-to-last in the majors in home runs. Bell hit a two-run shot as the Pirates beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-3 on Wednesday night to sweep a two-game interleague series.
