San Francisco Giants
Matt Cain pitched five shutout innings, then raised his arms and waved his cap, fighting off tears amid a standing ovation as he walked off the mound for final time Saturday in the San Francisco Giants' 3-2 loss to San Diego. Cain's decorated 13-year career came to an end and the home crowd at AT&T Park saluted the right-hander, a cornerstone of the team's championship era who pitched the only perfect game in franchise history. Cain took a curtain call and exited with a 1-0 lead. He gave up two hits, struck out four and walked one. He made his last start a day ahead of his 33rd birthday and at the close of a $127.5 million, six-year contract. Beset by injuries in recent years, Cain has said he Continue to Article

San Francisco Giants
San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain had one final day in the sun on Saturday, with five scoreless innings in the last start of his career. The right-hander, who announced his retirement on Wednesday, was showered with love from the AT&T Park crowd both before and throughout the game. Cain retired 10 of his first 11 Padres batters faced on Saturday, and allowed just a pair of singles through four innings. Leading 1-0, and after he walked Cory Spangenberg to open the fifth inning, Cain was visited by manager Bruce Bochy, who was booed by a Giants crowd who thought Cain might be removed, just three outs shy of qualifying for a win. But Bochy didn’t bring the hook, and Cain retired the next three Continue to Article

San Diego Padres
SAN FRANCISCO — Give the Giants credit for this: They’re not actively tanking.  Actually, depending on your view, you might not give them credit for that. The No. 1 overall pick is a nice prize in June, but the Giants took a step toward No. 2 on Friday night. They hammered the Padres 8-0 to kick off the final series of the year. Combine that with Detroit’s loss to the Twins and you have a tie for last place in the majors. The Tigers own the tiebreaker for the top pick.  The players don’t care about any of this, of course. They were happy to get the offense in gear and ride another strong Chris Stratton performance. They also were surely happy to clinch a season with fewer than 100 losses. Here Continue to Article

San Francisco Giants
SAN FRANCISCO — It wasn’t until the last couple of months that Nick Hundley got an everyday role with the Giants, but his presence has been felt since pitchers and catchers reported in early February.  Hundley, a veteran catcher in his first year with the Giants, is a clubhouse favorite, and on Friday he was voted the 2017 winner of the Willie Mac Award. The award is given annually to the player deemed most inspirational, and it is voted on by players, coaches, training staff, fans, and Willie McCovey.  “It’s pretty overwhelming to be standing here with Giants legends and be mentioned in the same company as Willie McCovey,” Hundley said. “To be mentioned in this company is incredible. I’d like Continue to Article
