Atlanta Braves
Gio Gonzalez gave up seven hits and five earned runs against the Atlanta Braves in an 8-0 loss last week in Washington, D.C. that began with the Nationals’ lefty striking out the first six batters he retired around two singles (one an RBI hit) and a double before things went pear-shaped in the top of the third. “Just one of those games you can’t really understand what happened, just pick up what you can and go from there.” - Gio Gonzalez on start vs ATL in D.C. A walk, single, and three-run HR by Freddie Freeman put the visiting Braves up 4-0, and two doubles in the top of the fourth made it five runs total against the southpaw. “It was weird to me,” Gonzalez explained after that game, “you get the strikeouts then all of a sudden the hits came in, it was one of those games you just take it for what it was, sweep it under the rug, get ready for tomorrow. Washington Nationals
Both Washington Nationals’ General Manager Mike Rizzo and Manager Dusty Baker provided updates on 24-year-old outfielder Bryce Harper today, as the hard-hitting slugger does what he can to get back in the lineup before the start of the NLDS. Rizzo was on 106.7 the FAN in D.C.’s The Sports Junkies this morning, and was, of course, asked how things are going for Harper, who injured his left knee and calf slipping on a slick first base bag back on August 12th in the nation’s capital. Harper took part in a simulated game in Atlanta on Tuesday, and Rizzo talked this morning about how he came out of the first live-ish action since the injury. “Harp came out looking good,” Rizzo said. “The anchor leg, Continue to Article

Washington Nationals
Bryce Harper, out with a bone bruise in his knee, was able to take batting practice again yesterday. He also sprinted and played catch and stuff and reported no problems. As such, the Washington Nationals are optimistic he’ll be able to return next week. This is certainly good news for Washington. By coming back next week Harper should be able to shake off some rust before the playoffs start. Harper, who has been out since mid-August, is hitting .326/.419/.614 with 29 homers and 87 RBI in 106 games on the year. Continue to Article

Atlanta Braves
Dusty Baker has talked often in his time in the nation’s capital about how his best ideas for his lineups often come to him when he’s restless late at night. “My wife used to get on me because I had a pen and piece of paper by my bed and turn the light on — and she’d get upset,” Baker told reporters, as quoted in the Washington Post in May 2016. It happened again this past Saturday night, when Baker came up with a plan to move Anthony Rendon up from the six-spot he’s occupied for most of the season to third in the lineup. Rendon went 0 for 2 against Dodgers’ lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu, leaving him at .333/.443/.667 vs left-handed pitchers this season, with a .296/.393/.508 line against right-handers on the year. Atlanta Braves
Mets RHP Robert Gsellman gave up one unearned run in seven innings during Sunday's 5-1 win against the Braves at SunTrust Park in Atlanta. Gsellman, who entered Sunday with a 5.58 ERA and had allowed three or more runs in seven of his last eight starts, shut down the Braves, retiring 19 of the first 22 batters he faced. "He's a competitive guy, an outstanding athlete and he's being challenged by something right now," manager Terry Collins said. "He hasn't the kind of year that we anticipated or he anticipated and he's got to show us he can be one of those guys again, and today he showed us he could." Pitching coach Dan Warthen said he thought Gsellman struggled earl this season by trying to emulate Continue to Article
