Washington Nationals
Bryce Harper, out with a bone bruise in his knee, was able to take batting practice again yesterday. He also sprinted and played catch and stuff and reported no problems. As such, the Washington Nationals are optimistic he’ll be able to return next week. This is certainly good news for Washington. By coming back next week Harper should be able to shake off some rust before the playoffs start. Harper, who has been out since mid-August, is hitting .326/.419/.614 with 29 homers and 87 RBI in 106 games on the year. Continue to Article

Dusty Baker has talked often in his time in the nation’s capital about how his best ideas for his lineups often come to him when he’s restless late at night. “My wife used to get on me because I had a pen and piece of paper by my bed and turn the light on — and she’d get upset,” Baker told reporters, as quoted in the Washington Post in May 2016. It happened again this past Saturday night, when Baker came up with a plan to move Anthony Rendon up from the six-spot he’s occupied for most of the season to third in the lineup. Rendon went 0 for 2 against Dodgers’ lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu, leaving him at .333/.443/.667 vs left-handed pitchers this season, with a .296/.393/.508 line against right-handers on the year. Mets RHP Robert Gsellman gave up one unearned run in seven innings during Sunday's 5-1 win against the Braves at SunTrust Park in Atlanta. Gsellman, who entered Sunday with a 5.58 ERA and had allowed three or more runs in seven of his last eight starts, shut down the Braves, retiring 19 of the first 22 batters he faced. "He's a competitive guy, an outstanding athlete and he's being challenged by something right now," manager Terry Collins said. "He hasn't the kind of year that we anticipated or he anticipated and he's got to show us he can be one of those guys again, and today he showed us he could." Pitching coach Dan Warthen said he thought Gsellman struggled earl this season by trying to emulate Continue to Article

The Mets are reportedly concerned about having RHP Noah Syndergaard return this season as they feel he needs to be completely healthy in order to come back, according to The Record's Matt Ehalt. Syndergaard had hoped to return from a partially torn lat during this weekend's series against the Atlanta Braves and did not report any issues during a bullpen session on Thursday, but the Mets determined he was not yet ready to return after they reassessed him on Saturday. Manager Terry Collins said Syndergaard will face live batters before he returns and will pitch in a simulated game at some point this week, according to the New York Daily News' Kristie Ackert. "We're just trying to make sure we do Continue to Article
