The San Francisco Giants and Washington Nationals will play a split doubleheader on Sunday after their series opener Friday night was postponed. Giants players were already leaving the stadium several minutes before the announcement was made, a half-hour lag in Major League Baseball informing the teams and fans getting the notice. Giants manager Bruce Bochy was informed around 9:15 of the postponement, which was announced on the Nationals' Twitter account and in the press box at 9:47 and in the stadium at 9:52. Remember when those stories came out about the Washington Nationals reportedly asking about the possibility of a $300M retractable roof on Nationals Park? Washington Business Journal article by Michael Nelbauer reported at the time that a "source in the mayor’s office" told him then-Mayor Vincent Gray, "... 'started laughing,'" when approached about the proposed addition to the Nationals' home. It would, of course, be helpful, especially on a night like tonight when the threat of rain could have us waiting around for news of a potential delay or a possible postponement, but yeah, there are probably better ways to spend $300M dollars, like a low-ball/starting point on an extension offer to Bryce Harper... A crowd had gathered at Rockford’s Beyer Stadium, waiting for something to start as familiar baseball diamond dust swirled in the air. Fittingly, the girls were walking on the same field that the trailblazing Rockford Peaches had once called home. The first-place Washington Nationals have five players on the 25-man roster who were not part of the organization when spring training began: outfielder Howie Kendrick and pitchers Edwin Jackson, Sean Doolittle, Ryan Madson and Brandon Kintzler.
