A crowd had gathered at Rockford’s Beyer Stadium, waiting for something to start as familiar baseball diamond dust swirled in the air. Fittingly, the girls were walking on the same field that the trailblazing Rockford Peaches had once called home. It was no mistake that Baseball For All’s third-ever tournament was being held in Rockford. Continue to Article

The first-place Washington Nationals have five players on the 25-man roster who were not part of the organization when spring training began: outfielder Howie Kendrick and pitchers Edwin Jackson, Sean Doolittle, Ryan Madson and Brandon Kintzler. The latter three are transforming the bullpen for the Nationals, who host the Miami Marlins on Tuesday in the second of four games in a showdown of National League East teams. Washington right-hander A.J. Cole (1-1, 4.91 ERA) will start against Miami right-hander Vance Worley (1-2, 5.31). Continue to Article

Barry Bonds so badly wanted to play one final season. On the 10th anniversary of breaking baseball's all-time home run mark, Bonds told The Associated Press on Monday night he believes he would have reached 800 homers or come very close. Bonds said it "stung" to walk away from a decorated 22-year career with little notice immediately after a record-setting 2007 season with the San Francisco Giants, when he topped Hank Aaron's mark. Bonds said there were never discussions about him playing for the Giants in 2008. He also said he didn't push for it because, "I was just told I'm not coming back and that was it." The 53-year-old Bonds now works for the Giants. He was at AT&T Park on Monday night, Continue to Article

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh acquired the veteran utility infielder Sean Rodriguez from Atlanta on Saturday in exchange for minor league infielder Connor Joe. The Pirates also claimed reliever George Kontos off waivers from the San Francisco Giants. Rodriguez played 279 for Pittsburgh in 2015 and 2016, hitting .260 with 22 home runs and 79 RBIs while filling a variety of roles. He signed a two-year free agent deal with the Braves last winter. Rodriguez was involved in an offseason car accident and spent the first half of this season on the disabled list before making his debut with the Braves on July 17. Rodriguez hit just .162 in 15 games with Atlanta. Kontos went 0-5 with a 3.83 ERA in 50 games Continue to Article
