John Dowd, a retired Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld lawyer who is now part of President Donald Trump's outside legal team, cannot evade allegations that he defamed former professional baseball player Pete Rose, a Philadelphia federal judge ruled. Dowd is part of the legal team representing Trump in the investigations of possible collusion by the Trump campaign with Russia, including the criminal probe being led by special counsel Robert Mueller III. But the onetime Akin Gump lawyer is also known for his work in 1989 on the so-called Dowd Report, which found that Rose bet on baseball during his affiliation with the Cincinnati Reds and which paved the way for Rose's lifetime ban from Major League Baseball. CINCINNATI -- Gio Gonzalez pitched four-hit ball into the ninth inning, and Bryce Harper extended his mid-July tear with a pair of homers on Friday night, leading the Washington Nationals to a 5-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Gonzalez (8-4) snapped his streak of three straight tough-luck losses. He allowed a double and three infield singles before leaving with one out in the ninth after his 113th pitch. As you’re well aware by now, Joey Votto promised to buy his Cincinnati Reds teammate Zack Cozart a donkey if Cozart was selected to play in the 2017 All-Star game. As it turns out, both were selected — Cozart by vote of the fans as the NL’s starting shortstop and Votto as a reserve. Better than that, Votto has proven to be a man of his word.
