The Pablo Sandoval era is over in Boston. Sandoval was informed Friday that he has been designated for assignment, the Red Sox announced. The move effectively terminates one of the worst free-agent signings in franchise history, although the Red Sox still owe the 30-year-old third baseman approximately $49 million through the end of the 2019 season. Boston has 10 days to either trade or release Sandoval. "I thank the Boston Red Sox for the opportunity and I remain positive that with the love and support of my family I will continue on with my career," Sandoval told ESPN's Marly Rivera. Sandoval said he is currently in Miami, where he will remain training and working out, preparing for the next Continue to Article

SAN FRANCISCO -- Trade deadline season officially kicked off Thursday morning in a shocking way. A couple of team Twitter accounts scooped the industry, announcing the Jose Quintana-for-top prospects deal in Chicago.  It's a good fit for both sides. The Cubs get a controllable ace to try and turn this season around and be part of future Wrigley contenders. The White Sox continued to load a system that's laughably deep with potential stars; they now have nine of the top 100 players in the minors according to MLB Pipeline.  A key word this time of year is "fit," and in that respect, Thursday wasn't a great day for the Giants. There aren't many contenders out there that could take on Johnny Cueto, Continue to Article

Hello there, it's time to update the Eater 38, your answer and ours to any question that begins with, "Can you recommend a restaurant...?" This specially selected group covers much of the city, spans myriad cuisines, and aims to collectively satisfy all of your restaurant needs. Every few of months, we'll be adding worthy restaurants that were omitted, have newly become eligible, or have stepped up their game; restaurants must be open at least six months to qualify for consideration. This round, two specialists in seafood join the list; Oceanside's inventive and eclectic Wrench and Rodent Seabasstropub and La Jolla's straightforward but simply perfect El Pescador. Restaurants are listed in no Continue to Article

SAN FRANCISCO — Madison Bumgarner was not too concerned about his nine-run rehab start last week, pointing out that he just left too many pitches over the plate as he worked to get his pitch count up. Told that the A-ball team was full of some promising Dodgers hitting prospects, Bumgarner smiled.  “Apparently,” he said.  He expects it to go a bit smoother tonight when he returns to San Jose to get that count up to around 90 pitches. For a third straight rehab start, however, Bumgarner won’t hit. The San Jose Giants use a DH, although manager Nestor Rojas was a bit tempted to give it up last week.  This leads to an interesting question: Bumgarner believes he’ll be ready to pitch, but will he Continue to Article
