Los Angeles Angels pitcher Matt Shoemaker underwent surgery to stop bleeding on his brain after he was struck in the head by a line drive against the Seattle Mariners. Los Angeles athletic trainer Adam Nevala is staying with him until he is able to travel to Southern California, perhaps as soon as in a few days. Angels general manager Billy Eppler provided the update Monday in Oakland, saying Shoemaker had been receiving CT scans every 2-3 hours when the third image showed increased bleeding, shortly before 9 p.m. That's when surgery was determined the next step. Los Angeles Angels pitcher Matt Shoemaker has a "small skull fracture" after taking a line drive to the head in Sunday's game against the Mariners in Seattle, the team said. Shoemaker crumpled to his knees when the ball off the bat of Kyle Seager hit him flush on the right side of his head. In a story posted on the team website, the Angels said Shoemaker suffered "a small skull fracture and small hematoma that will end his season". Continue to Article

When the Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners take the field for the first game of a three-game series Monday afternoon, it will mark the fourth time in just over a week that the two American League West rivals have squared off. The Rangers (82-55) completed a three-game sweep over Seattle last week and improved to 11-4 against the Mariners this season. Matt Shoemaker turned his head just enough to avoid taking Kyle Seager's 105 mph line drive square in the face, then stumbled before falling to the infield grass. ''That was probably the scariest thing I've ever seen on a baseball field,'' Seager said.
