The New York Mets were well aware they would need to go beyond their five starters over the course of this season, but they certainly couldn't have expected that to happen so quickly. The Philadelphia Phillies must be thrilled to hand the ball to Vince Velasquez every few days. Logan Verrett goes for another impressive performance in place of Jacob deGrom as the Mets try to end Velasquez's shutout streak Tuesday night. Continue to Article

Known for his volatile mound presence and blistering fastball, Yordano Ventura says there's something much different about him this year. Ventura is finally showing some confidence in his offspeed pitches, something the right-hander looks to continue Tuesday night when the Kansas City Royals open a six-game homestand with their first look at the AL Central rival Detroit Tigers. Ventura (0-0, 2.45 ERA) has picked up where he left off in 2015 when he went 7-1 with a 2.38 ERA with 81 strikeouts over his last 11 regular-season starts. Continue to Article

Carlos Correa was treated to a very special surprise Sunday when a friend of his showed up for a visit out of the blue. That friend was Neil Kerrigan, an 18-year-old Houston Astros fan who is battling a brain tumor.  Kerrigan and Correa have been friends since last September, when Kerrigan was at Minute Maid Park celebrating his birthday. He watched batting practice, and afterward the two struck up a conversation. After finding out when Kerrigan's real birthday was, Correa decided to give him a real surprise. He bought a cake and personally delivered it to Houston Christian High School, where Kerrigan is a senior.  [ Join a Yahoo Daily Fantasy Baseball contest now ] Since turnabout is fair play, it was Kerrigan's turn to surprise Correa, which he definitely did. Correa had given Kerrigan a jersey the last time he visited, and this time gave Kerrigan his hat. Later on, he went back and gave one of the younger members of the Kerrigan clan a glove. Neil is grateful for the support of a player like Correa, and he's thrilled to be able to share their relationship. "It was so much fun," Kerrigan said. "I had met him before, but it was fun to see him with my family and for them to get a chance to meet him." The admiration flows in both directions, as Correa finds Kerrigan's battle with cancer inspiring.  "It's real inspiring," Correa said. "It makes you appreciate things a lot more. I feel like God has put me here for a purpose and I feel like I can impact people in a positive way, and I feel like that's what I'm going to do my entire career." Best wishes to Neil Kerrigan as he continues to battle cancer. If Carlos Correa has anything to say about it, it's a battle he'll win.  More MLB coverage from Yahoo Sports: The StewPod: A baseball podcast by Yahoo Sports Subscribe via iTunes  or  via RSS feed - - - - - - - Liz Roscher is a writer for Big League Stew on Yahoo Sports. Houston Astros
The Lone Star State battle for last year's AL West title went down to the final week of the season before Texas edged Houston by two games, setting the tone for a rivalry that's been enhanced by the Astros' resurgence. The Rangers won the final seven home meetings with Houston last season and will be coming off two days' rest when this three-game set begins Tuesday night in Arlington. "Last year those games were amazing," Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus told MLB's official website. Continue to Article
