Jake Lamb dashed home with the go-ahead run on a soft infield single by pinch-hitter Phil Gosselin with one out in the ninth inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Diego Padres 3-2 Friday night. Brad Ziegler escaped a big jam to preserve the victory, getting Jon Jay to ground into a game-ending double play with the bases loaded. Lamb reached on an infield single against Fernando Rodney (0-1) to start the ninth, stole second and went to third when the throw by catcher Derek Norris bounced into center field for an error. Bryce Harper had three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs, and Joe Ross allowed three hits in 7 2/3 shutout innings to help the Washington Nationals to their best start in club history with a 9-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night. Jayson Werth added two doubles and three RBIs, and Michael Taylor also went deep for Washington, which improved to 8-1 to mark the best nine-game start since the franchise was born in 1969 as the Montreal Expos.
