Eastern Michigan returns home at 1-0 after beating Sacramento State 28-17. San José State is 0-1 after a 42-26 loss at No. 14 USC, but the Spartans present a tougher test than the records suggest. The Eagles are the more likely winners at Rynearson Stadium. Whether they can cover 4.5 points is a separate question.

Quarterback play could keep it close

Noah Kim gives Eastern Michigan a solid path to a home win. He completed 27 of 38 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns against Sacramento State, then scored on a five-yard run. The Eagles gained 348 total yards and held the ball for 32:28.

Luke Weaver showed he can threaten a defense with his arm and his legs, even against stronger opposition. He completed 21 of 32 passes for 234 yards and two touchdowns at USC, ran for 42 yards and another score, and did not commit a turnover. Carson Clark and Jerry McClure each had six catches, with Clark gaining 74 yards and McClure adding 68.

That quarterback production makes a margin beyond a field goal difficult to trust. Eastern Michigan has home-field advantage and the better opening result, but Weaver gives the Spartans a credible chance to stay within one possession.

What could decide the game

Eastern Michigan's defense can knock San José State off schedule. The Eagles held Sacramento State to 271 total yards, forced two takeaways and allowed three conversions on 13 third downs. Linebacker Zach Mowchan led the effort with 14 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.

San José State cannot afford another slow start. The Spartans trailed USC 28-0 at halftime before gaining 221 yards after the break and outscoring the Trojans 23-7 in the fourth quarter. The finish showed what Weaver and the offense can do, but falling behind early again would allow Eastern Michigan to control the game.

Turnovers could swing a close contest. San José State did not give the ball away and committed only one penalty at USC. Eastern Michigan forced two turnovers against Sacramento State, while the Spartans have recorded a takeaway in 21 of 26 games under coach Ken Niumatalolo.
