With Justin Smoak a free agent and Rowdy Tellez is coming off a rookie season that isn't particularly encouraging, it's clear that first base is a major hole for the Toronto Blue Jays. Free agency is a valid route, but so too is the trade market where there are some interesting bats floating around who could be a major upgrade for the Blue Jays' lineup. The Houston Astros appear to be descending further into a lengthy PR nightmare, and it looks like they're nowhere close to getting out of it. After The Athletic's discovery this past week of the team stealing signs back in 2017 through a complicated system, Major League Baseball has decided to launch an investigation into the situation, and a current member of the Toronto Blue Jays is involved. Marvin Benard attended Los Angeles Harbor College from 1990 to 1991 and played baseball there before transferring to another college and getting drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 1992. Mostly because, over time, we've sort of figured out that what teams and team spokesmen say about potential free agent signings is rather pointless and oftentimes actively misleading. The latest example comes courtesy of the San Diego Padres. This was in The Athletic nine days ago: “If there's another Hosmer contract or Machado contract that really makes sense, the answer from our organization is going to be, 'Tell me more,'” Padres general partner Peter Seidler said after last week's press conference for new manager Jayce Tingler. The San Diego Padres were famous for wearing multiple variations of brown and mustard yellow from their inception as a major league franchise in 1969 through 1984. After that they went with only slight brown or gold accents and then just blue and orange until 2003. Since 2004 they've been almost exclusively in blue and white, with the only exception being a minor addition of gold accenting in 2016. Continue to Article
