The Pittsburgh Pirates will name Ben Cherrington as the team's new general manager, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Friday. The former Boston Red Sox executive vice president and general manager, 45, has been the Toronto Blue Jays' senior vice president of baseball operations for just over three years. Cherington, who replaced Theo Epstein in Boston following the 2011 season, spent four seasons in his Red Sox post before Dave Dombrowski was brought aboard as the team's president of baseball operations. When the National League Cy Young tally was announced on Wednesday, the Washington Nationals ace finished in a second-place tie with Hyun Jin-Ryu of the Los Angeles Dodgers, well behind winner and New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom. New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom picked up the Cy Young Award for a second straight year on Wednesday while Justin Verlander was named the American League's winner for a second time. DeGrom was handed the pitching prize after a season which saw him finish with a 1.89 earned run average from his final 23 starts covering 152 innings. The Mets star also led the National League with 255 strikeouts and joins an elite band of back-to-back Cy Young winners that includes the likes of Sandy Koufax, Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson, Clayton Kershaw and Max Scherzer. New San Francisco Giants manager Gabe Kapler said Wednesday that he should have sought the guidance of experts four years ago when dealing with a 17-year-old girl who contacted him about an assault reportedly witnessed by Los Angeles Dodgers minor leaguers. The teen later accused one of the players of a sexual crime, something Kapler said he didn't know in 2015 when the Dodgers organization opted not to contact police.
