Harrison Dillard, a 1940s track star who had been the oldest living US Olympic gold medalist, died Friday at age 96, the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee announced Saturday. Dillard, who had been hospitalized at the Cleveland Clinic with stomach cancer, won the 100 meters at the 1948 London Olympics, edging compatriot Barney Ewell in the first photo finish in Olympic history. Dillard also won 110m hurdles gold at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics and was part of the US 4x100 gold medal relays at the 1948 and 1952 Olympics. Continue to Article

The Pittsburgh Pirates will name Ben Cherrington as the team's new general manager, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Friday. The former Boston Red Sox executive vice president and general manager, 45, has been the Toronto Blue Jays' senior vice president of baseball operations for just over three years. Cherington, who replaced Theo Epstein in Boston following the 2011 season, spent four seasons in his Red Sox post before Dave Dombrowski was brought aboard as the team's president of baseball operations. New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom picked up the Cy Young Award for a second straight year on Wednesday while Justin Verlander was named the American League's winner for a second time. DeGrom was handed the pitching prize after a season which saw him finish with a 1.89 earned run average from his final 23 starts covering 152 innings.
