Montreal
Michael Hutchinson is off to a less-than ideal start. With an overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets, and travel, sandwiched in between what was an ideally-spaced home-and-home with the Boston Bruins, and with their backup netminder thrust into his most disadvantaged start of the season to date, the Toronto Maple Leafs suffered another defeat at TD Garden, losing 4-2 on Tuesday night. Brendan Gallagher scored a goal just six seconds into the second period and Carey Price finished with 32 saves as the visiting Montreal Canadiens handed the St. Louis Blues their fourth straight loss, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon. Gallagher's goal was two seconds shy of the fastest to begin any period in NHL history. Shea Weber had a goal and an assist and Jordan Weal, Jonathan Drouin and Nick Suzuki also scored goals for Montreal, which knocked off the defending Stanley Cup champions for the second time in eight days, outscoring the Blues 11-5 in the process. San Jose
The San Jose Sharks will try for their third consecutive win when they host the Metropolitan Division-leading Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday night. The Sharks began the season with four consecutive lopsided losses, getting outscored 17-5 in the process, but the team has experienced a turnaround since the return of franchise icon Patrick Marleau to the lineup. The 40-year-old center, who spent his first 19 seasons in San Jose and ranks first in franchise history in games played (1,495), points (1,085) and goals (510), had two goals in his first game back, a 5-4 victory at Chicago on Thursday. Steven Stamkos scored a goal and an assist, and Nikita Kucherov recorded two assists as the Tampa Bay Lightning earned a 3-1 road victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday. Stamkos' fourth goal of the season put Tampa Bay ahead 2-1 just 1:04 into the second period. It was his second game-winner of the season, and the 397th goal of Stamkos' career, breaking a tie with Hall of Famers Dave Keon and Paul Coffey for 98th on the NHL's all-time goal-scoring list.
