Chris Bassitt struck out 11 in his return from paternity leave, and Matt Olson had a solo home run among four hits Saturday night, leading the host Oakland Athletics to a 10-2 thumping of the Detroit Tigers. Jurickson Profar and Matt Chapman also homered for Oakland, which moved 1 1/2 games ahead of Cleveland in the battle for the second American League wild card. With the aid of a couple of extra days off for the birth of his daughter, Bassitt (10-5) remained unbeaten in his last seven starts. Continue to Article

Former St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Chris Duncan, who helped lead the team to a World Series victory in 2006, died following a battle with brain cancer, the team announced Friday. Willi Castro doubled home Dawel Lugo with the tiebreaking run in the top of the 11th inning Friday night, allowing the visiting Detroit Tigers to avoid a two-loss night with a 5-4 victory over the Oakland Athletics. The win came following a 7-3 A's win in the completion of a suspended game, with three relievers combining to shut out the Tigers over three innings more than three months after rain had halted a matchup Oakland was leading in the seventh inning at Detroit. The A's led the regularly scheduled game 4-0, but the Tigers forced extra innings with two late two-run rallies before pushing across the difference-maker against the seventh Oakland pitcher, Paul Blackburn (0-2), in the 11th. Chad Pinder homered, Mike Fiers earned his fourth victory or his 14th, however you want to look at it, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Detroit Tigers 7-3 on Friday night in a game that was suspended on May 19 because of the weather. "There were a lot of oddities," A's manager Bob Melvin said. Willi Castro hit a go-ahead double in the top of the 11th as the Tigers rallied from a four-run deficit to snap Oakland's three-game winning streak with a 5-4 victory in the regularly scheduled matchup. Christian Yelich smacked his 44th home run of the season and four pitchers combined on a three-hitter to lift the host Milwaukee Brewers to a 7-1 victory against the Chicago Cubs on Friday night. Brewers right-hander Zach Davies scattered one run and three hits with one walk and four strikeouts in five innings to earn the victory. Davies (9-7) yielded to Brent Suter, Junior Guerra and Ray Black, who teamed for four innings of no-hit, one-walk, three-strikeout relief. Continue to Article
