Joey Votto singled, doubled, homered and drove in two runs to lead the Cincinnati Reds to an 8-5 win against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night. Jose Iglesias hit a pinch-hit solo home run in the seventh off reliever Jose Alvarez (3-4) to move Cincinnati back ahead 6-5, and relief pitcher Michael Lorenzen drilled a two-run blast in the eighth to make it 8-5. A night after a brutal loss, the New York Mets got back to doing what they have since the All-Star break: Winning another series. Justin Wilson and the bullpen held on this time, rookie Pete Alonso hit his major league-leading 45th home run and the Mets rebounded to stop the Washington Nationals 8-4 Wednesday. A day after a trio of Mets relievers was tagged for seven runs in the bottom of the ninth inning in an 11-10 loss to the Nationals, three pitchers combined to close with 3 1/3 scoreless innings. Nicholas Castellanos hit a three-run homer and finished with four RBIs, Willson Contreras and Kyle Schwarber added solo shots, and the Chicago Cubs cruised to a 6-1 win over the visiting Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night. Contreras went deep in his first game back from a stint on the injured list because of a right hamstring strain. Ben Zobrist also enjoyed a successful return to the Cubs as he went 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs in his first appearance since leaving the team in early May because of personal reasons. Jordan Lyles scattered six hits over six-plus innings as the visiting Milwaukee Brewers earned a split of their two-game interleague series against the Houston Astros with a 4-2 victory Tuesday. Lyles (10-8) improved to 5-1 with a 2.56 ERA over seven starts since joining the Brewers via a trade with Pittsburgh on July 29.
